Swordsmiths alternate the use of high-carbon steel and low-carbon steel, deforming them through repeated folding and forging to produce steel and craftsmanship, until a large number of layers are obtained and a unique pattern is formed. Its characteristics are repeated heating and forging. Repeated forging can eliminate inclusions in the steel, reduce the size of residual inclusions, so that its composition becomes more uniform, the structure becomes denser, the grains are refined, and the properties of the steel are improved.
– Aesthetics – The alternating layers of steel create beautiful patterns on the blade that are part of the katana’s artistic design. This adds to the sword’s visual appeal.
– Strength – The combination of soft, flexible low-carbon steel and hard, tough high-carbon steel creates a blade that is both strong and less prone to breaking. The two steels complement each other.
– Flexibility – The folds and layers make the blade more flexible and less likely to snap when bent or stressed. This allows the katana to absorb impacts rather than break.
– Durability – The refined metallurgy and removal of impurities creates a more durable, longer-lasting blade that can withstand repeated use.
